Malaria- Liver Damage
Hi Doc
My brother lives in Maputo. He has had several Malaria attacks in recent years. He has been told that his liver has also suffered from these attacks. We are desperately looking for advise on the correct diet to follow to assist the liver. I have gone through the archives but end up with referrals to the "weight reduction diet". Is this what you would recommend? Any info will be welcome.
Thanks
Chris

Dear JCB
Basically your brother needs to eat a diet that is rich in protective nutrients such as fruit and vegetables and whole grains, fat-free milk and yoghurt, that has a reduced fat content. Read the notes that accompany the Slimming Diet because they give you an idea of what foods to avoid because they contain a lot of fat and how you can prepare food without adding more fat. He should also drink plenty of clean water (boiled and cooled) and can try diluting products like Game or Energade (50:50) to give the water some flavour and to increase this potassium intake. The use of liver-sparing products such as Essensiale or Pro-hep will also help. Physical rest is important as this gives the liver a chance to recuperate. I would suggest that you send him products like fat-free milk, yoghurt, Game, Essensiale, Lite margarine, cereals, crisp breads, and other nutritious foods that may be difficult to access in Maputo.
Best regards
