Peanut/Soy Allergies Related?
Although, I will eventually get my Allergy Doctor to test me, in the meantime, I would like to know if it is common to be allergic to Soy if I know I'm allergic to peanuts. I was not tested for soy. I will eat something, have severe cramping and diarreah and even though I know there is no peanut ingredient in it because I'm careful, I'll go back and check it and it says "contains soy or soybeans". I eat out a lot, but one day I even got violently sick after eating dry breakfast cereal as a snack. After looking at the box, I saw (the cereal contained soy). Can this be the culprit?

Dear Joanie
Cross-reactivity between different allergens is possible or you may have multiple allergies, both to soya and peanuts. You do need to have those allergy tests ASAP because peanut allergy can be most severe and the dr may have to prescribe certain precautionary measures for your safety. In the meanwhile avoid all foods which contain peanuts and soya - the latter is found in so many processed foods nowadays that it becomes a problem when trying to select a balanced diet. So if you should test positive to both allergens, then please consult a clinical dietitian (check the List of Dietitians on this Website or phone 082-593-0276 or send an e-mail to or look in your local telephone directory or Yellow Pages, to find a dietitian in your area). The dietitian will help you to work out a diet that avoids the offending foods, but is still balanced.
