The evil drug
doc pls help i am due to start taking 60 mg of prednisone for the next month. What foods can you recommend i eat to try and control the negative effects its going to have on my body, i've worked so hard to reach my goal weight now this. Can i include celery and asparagus for the water retention and what else? I know i should avoid salt. Is there any hope that i could at least remain constant in weight or is it inevitable that i will gain given that it gives one a HUGE appetite. I need to fight the effects of this evil yet wonderful drug and i need advice before i go MAD.

Dear Mims
Unfortunately cortisone treatment can have negative effects on weight gain and/or water retention. Ask the prescribing dr to give you a mild diuretic to counteract the water retention if you suffer from this side-effect. You can also use the celery or juniper berries (buy from health shop and boil up to make a tea) to counteract the water retention. You need to reduce your fat intake while you take the cortisone to prevent fat deposition in the abdominal area. Cut out all fatty foods as far as possible. If you are allowed to exercise (?) do 30 min a day to keep things under control.
Hope you feel better soon
