Hi Dr,

I have read so many times that if you want to loose weight, you need to drink loads of water.
Will you please explain to me why? What does water do that a person needs it for weight loss?

Thank you

Dear Curious
Adults need to drink 2.5 litres of liquid a day (some of which can be water). If you overdo your water intake it can be harmful and wash important minerals like potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium out of the body thus causing so-called electrolyte imbalances. So if you are slimming don't have more than 2-3 cups of water a day in addition to your normal liquid intake. Everything in moderation. The reason why some diet regimens state that you need to drink masses of water is that it will make you feel fuller, but it is important not to overdo this because it can be potentially harmful.
Best regards
