Dear Suretta
Congratulations on the birth of your baby. Because breastfeeding is so important and will have a positive influence on your child's entire life (including the prevention of obesity in later life), you should not use any diet pills or potions, no fad diets and not exercise excessively until you have completed breastfeeding. Also keep in mind that practically all diet pills, pharmacological and herbal pills, are excreted in breast milk, so they should be avoided during breastfeeding. You can use a balanced, energy-reduced, low-fat diet and moderate exercise to lose weight. Reduce your energy intake by eating an energy-reduced, low-fat, high-fibre diet (click on 'Diet' at the top of this page, 'Weight loss', ‘Balanced diet’ and then on 'Slimming Diet' for a copy of such a diet), and increase your energy output by doing regular exercise such as taking baby for a walk every day. Add 2 cups of fat-free milk or yoghurt to this diet to ensure that you both get sufficient calcium (1300 mg/day) for your needs.
Once you have stopped breastfeeding you can increase your exercise levels.
Enjoy the baby
