Your advice re calcium
Hi pls let me know if my 2.5 yr old daugther's diet is sufficient in calcium and iron, if not what symptoms should i look for especially with a iron deficiency because i was previously told by the paedi that because she looks pale we should give her a iron supp every 2nd day for 3 months, i have done that and the 3 months is now up, but i worry that she might be iron deficient and i wont know. i look in her eyes and it is red not white. i also dnt think she is pale skinned but rather it is her normal complexion in fact she has rosy cheeks. Also has a dairy and egg white allergy hence the soya and rice milk and omission of eggs! She is a healthy weight at 16.5kg

Breakfast: Oats porridge made with rice milk/1 slice brown bread (no butter) with low gi jam and rooibos tea with 1 tsp honey and rice milk or Pronutro, honey and rice milk.

10:00 Apple/naartjie/15 grapes

Lunch: Brown rice, red meat stew, some veg or durum wheat pasta, chicken skinless and veg or beef meat pie or macaroni with bacon and cheese (she tolerates cheese) or Haddock/Hake with some rice/pasta and some veg

15:00 1 soya yoghurt

Supper: she normally does not enjoy eating at night if she does it would be:

1 slice brown bread with low gi jam and rooibos like the morning, some of what is left of her lunch options or baked oven chips.

Liquids in a day: about 400 ml water, rooibos tea (never more than 2 little mugs a day) as above and around 250 ml diluted 100% fruit juice.

Thanks lk fwd to ure response.

Dear NiNi
I would estimate that your lassie is getting sufficient iron because she has at least 1 serving of meat or chicken or fish a day. However, I am not sure if the brand of rice milk you are using, is supplemented with calcium. Check on the label and if it is supplemented (e.g. 1 mg of calcium per ml or 100 mg of calcium per 100 ml), then because your lassie needs 800 mg of calcium a day and the soya yoghurt probably contains about 1 mg per ml, she needs to have 800 - (the amount of calcium in the soya yoghurt, say 150 mg) = 650 mg, thus she needs to ingest about 650 ml of the rice milk (if it is supplemented) per day (on her cereal, in the rooibos tea and as a drink). If necessary reduce her fruit juice intake so that she drinks more of the milk. If the rice milk is not supplemented with calcium you will have to give her a calcium supplement which will supply at least 500-600 mg a day. A child that is suffering from iron-deficiency would be listless, lethargic, tend to fall asleep all the time, get irritable because she is so tired and as you know the inside of the eyelid would be white, not nice and red and healthy. If she has these symptoms then you must take her back to the Paediatrician for additional iron supplements.
If she is only 2,5 years and already weighs 16,5 kg, then she is rather heavy as the average weight for a 3-year-old is only 13 kg! If she is very chubby then it may be a good idea to reduce the amount of fruit juice she is drinking as research shows that liquid, sweetened energy tends to cause weight gain more than solid foods. Also encourage her to be as active as possible to keep her weight in check.
Best regards
