Water purification
Looking for advice on reverse osmosis drinking water systems. A representative from a local company selling this system showed that our tap water in Cape Town ( northern suburbs ) is not of good quality and is in fact bad for our health. According to them this is the only effective way of purification. The price tag is about double compared to similar systems on sale in the USA.

Drinking water in Cape Town, including the northern suburbs, meets South African Bureau of Standards specifications, which are also World Health Organisation standards, and is tested regularly. If you’re concerned about it, though, you can ask City of Cape Town for the results of tests on drinking water in your area.

Home water treatment systems aren’t generally considered necessary if the water in your area meets specifications, unless you have a medical condition that makes you sensitive to certain substances, and your doctor has specifically advised using a device to reduce these substances in your drinking water. Installing such a device will probably make the water taste better and encourage you to drink more of it – just make sure you maintain it properly, otherwise it may end up worsening water quality. With reverse osmosis, it is essential that the filtration membrane is replaced regularly.

Keep in mind that home water treatment systems are not regulated by any official body, and that sometimes less reputable dealers can ‘talk up’ the potential health problems of drinking water.
