Doc, your expert advise please...
Hi doc,

Quick question, my gynea (a former fertility specialist) sent me a script for Fertimed. I have a perfect 24 day cycle without fail. His reasoning is it's going to be difficult to fall pregnant with such a short cycle and we need to lengthen that as my follicles are not mature enough for fertilization. Is this true?

What are the side effects of fertimed and what makes it different from Clomid?

I have already established that I do ovulate. My doc wants to conduct a scan on day 12 of my cycle. Is this correct? He is a great doc and I have full confidence in him. I would just like to have your expert opinion as well.

Thank you so much!

Dear Abigail

The reason for a shortened cycle i.e. 24 days may be two fold. One it may be related to a very short proliferative phase (the phase of follicular development leading up to ovulation), alternately the shortened cycle may be related to a shortened luteal phase (the phase from ovulation to menstruation). Therefore it is important for your gynaecologist to establish clearly which of the two phases of the cycle needs to be corrected. The treatment is different for each possibility. Clomid and Fertimed are the same products manufactured by different companies, with the active ingredient named Clomiphene Citrate. Clomid will not necessarily lengthen or improve the length of the cycle per se. It may possibly increase the number of eggs produced and as a consequence of this increase the amount of Progesterone produced for the luteal phase of the cycle. I would suggest that you approach your gynaecologist and ask him/her to explain the rationale behind the use of Fertimed.
