Scared of joining gym
Hi doc

Please help. I am a 26 year old with a 3 year old girl. I gained weight during my pregnancy that I cannot put off due to my busy schedule always, working during the day and attending classes in the evenings. I am wearing a size 16 to 18 now and feel like a 42 year old. I really want to join a gym but am so shy, I feel gym is for sexy people every one will laugh at me. How do I change my psyche regarding this. I have signed up a lot of times but just couldn't have the guts enough to face up to my fears. Please help I am desparate.

Hi ULI

As the Nike ad says, just DO IT! I go to gym and I can assure you, most people are far from sexy and in fact are there not to try to look good, but to exercise, look after their bodies, get healthy and perhaps lose a few kilos. They REALLY aren't going to be concerned about whether you are overweight, since they are too busy sweating it out themselves. You MUST look after yourself, your health is a gift to you, which if neglected may slip away.

I also recommend that you ask a gym instructor to go through some of the key machines with you, so that you know how they work. If you could afford it, it would be even more worthwhile to hire a personla trainer for one session, who can give you personalised attention for each exercise. Thereafter, you will better know what to do.

Your other option is to join an outdoor walking programme, where perhaps you will feel less self-conscious. If you live in Cape Town ph Sports Science on 021 659 5600 and ask about OPTIFIT.

Good luck and show everyone THAT YOU CAN DO IT! You'll feel so much better about life and about yourself.
