Baby & Hydrocephalus(water in the brain that causes swelling of the head)
Doc & anyone who can help, I'm nearly 26 weeks pregnant and worried about my baby contracting hydrocephalus. My first child has been diagnosed with this disease when he was three months old (turning 10yrs in May). Are there anything I can do to avoid this to happen to my unborn baby?/ After the baby is born, how early can I know the baby has hydrocephalus? I pray to God that this doen't happen again.

Please help - too concerned

Most cases of hydrocephalus are due to a blockage in the drainage system of the brain. This is a problem of the way the brain develops. I don't know whether you had scans in the pregnancy, as the hydrocephalus could have been there before birth but was only picked up later. Some infections can also cause blockage of the drainage system, as can bleeds into the brain. Most of these occur before birth. There isn't a way of preventing this happening, but it can be picked up early with ultrasound.
