The fetus can die and be retained without any bleeding. This is called a missed miscarriage. If the heart is not beating at 10 weeks, the baby is dead. This can occur after a normal pregnancy. Often the cause is an abnormality in the fetus - nature's way of preventing the birth of an abnormal baby.
