Fibroids and Hysterectomy
Dear GynaeDoc,

I was just wondering after reading your general advice to women with fibroid related problems like bleeding, pain, sexual discomfort etc, whether a hysterectomy is the only, absolute and final solution to this problem. I'm saying this because that seems to be the most recommended procedure by most GynaecDocs.
Why I'm asking is because I'one of those women who are suffering from excessive bleeding as a result of fibroids.
But to be honest I'm not comfortable with the removal of my uterus. I dont know whether its cultural or just psychological.
I have interviewed a few of my friends and relatives who have undergone the procedure and some them have remained with problems ranging from sexual to physical (eg stress incontinence) as a result of this procedure.
I have also been reading about Uterine Artery Embolisation(UAE)which sounds to me to be a less traumatic procedure.
Why cant such methods be used?
Can I kindly request for feedback from you and other ladies out there with regards to my concern?

If the fibroids are very large, bigger than a 12 week pregnancy, then medications are unlikely to help. Smaller ones can sometimes have the symptoms controlled with medication.
In certain circumstances, a myomectomy can be done (removal of the fibroids only). In terms of uterine artery embolisation, there are complications related to this and it requires expert training. I am not aware of anyone in SA at present who has done these.

Best wishes
