IUD - never had kids before
Hi there!

I would like to find out if it is a good idea for somebody to have a IUD inserted, if they have never had kids?

Is this not extremely painful? (insertion & removal)
(Can you request that it be done under general anaesthetic?)
How much does it cost?

Does the hormones have a lesser effect on your body, than the pill (Melodene)?

Thanks

There are two types of IUCD - copper and Mirena (hormone coated). The Mirena is thicker, so could be painful to insert if you have not had children, and a general anaesthetic might then be advisable. It costs about R1000 and lasts for 5 years. The copper IUCD can be inserted more easily and costs a few hundred rand. It has no hormones so there are no hormonal effects. You should be in a monogamous relationship to use a IUCD as there can be an increased risk of infection.

Best wishes
