Spermicide gel without condoms

I'm using Triphasil as a contraceptive, but have been on antibiotics on and off recently because of tonsilitis. Am worried about contraceptive failure, and thus bought myself some spermicide jelly, because my husband hates condoms. But now the package insert says you need to use the gel with condoms? What will happen if I use just the gel? Is that safe?
