Shin splints are basically inflammation of the tendons below the knee and usually the result of overuse exercise or where there was a sudden increase in activity. Usually there is some form of physical activity involved.
Anti-inflammatory drugs can relieve the pain. You also need to rest the leg for a short while and be relatively pain free when starting exercise again. Stretching exercises twice a day are also recommended and you also need good footwear.
