Sick Leave - new employee
New employee - has been with me 3 months and has already been sick [3days] taken 2 days leave and now went to her doctor and got booked off for another 3 days some minor matter [sinusitis] - not too sick to smoke or sit with other employees and chat - how do I deal with this????

An employee accrues sick leave on a daily basis on the basis of 1 hour for every 17 hours worked. If the employee is sick over and above that then they would take unpaid sick leave. If you believe the sick leave is creating a real problem at work then you have to deal with it in terms of Schedule 8 of the Labour Relations Act, i.e.: you have to ascertain from your own medical practitioners after the employee has consented to an appointment, as to whether this is an on-going problem.

We do not believe that any employee should be allowed to smoke anywhere on the premises.
