Carefully conducted scientific research in the field of glycobiology has increased our understanding of human health and disease. However, this information has been used by several companies to market plant extracts which are called "glyconutrients." The glyconutrient industry has a worldwide sales force of over half a million people and sells nearly half a billion dollars (USD) of products annually. However, many of the claims made by these companies have not been validated in carefully controlled clinical trials. As healthcare professionals, it is our responsibility to alert patients to this problem, as many will be tempted to spend large sums of money on products which have no proven benefit for thisr condition, while at the same time denying themselves access to medications for which there is a well proven benefit.
