Hi Stacey - well this is new one on me - being asked to tell you why a yoga posture is bad for you. It is important to note that any posture in yoga (or any physical activity for that matter) has potential to harm especially if pushed too hard or if you ignore the messages your body sends you or you are taking instruction from someone without sufficient knowledge. As for the Plow position, I have to start by reiterating the benefits, Halasana (Plow position):
- Calms the brain
- Stimulates the abdominal organs and the thyroid gland
- Stretches the shoulders and spine
- Helps relieve the symptoms of menopause
- Reduces stress and fatigue
- Is therapeutic for backache, headache, infertility, insomnia, sinusitis
As with all yoga postures there are easier variations for injuries or specific conditions and in this posture particular care should be taken with those who have neck or back problems. Also care should be taken if pregnant - especially if the student is new to yoga. Caution should also be exercised if the student suffers from diarrhea, asthma, high blood pressure or is menstruating. In the posture it is important to keep the neck long and pressure off the cervical spine and also to not round the lower spine because this can place pressure on the discs - in some styles props would be used to assist.
Hope this helps.
