Thoracic surgery & Yoga
Hallo there

Very glad to see we have an expert on Yoga on Health 24!!

I am nearly 44 yrs old and started with Yoga yesterday. I had thoracic surgery to my right side in Aug 2001 and still have a tender feeling above my breast. I did not have an operation to the left side yet (won't have it!!) but they tell me it is also not 100%.

I want to know if it is save for me to do Yoga. I did not have time to discuss my medical record with the instructor.

Thanks for your time

Dear Monica - yoga is very safe as long as you remember to be mindful, never push into pain, forget competing with those around you and take a rest when you feel you need to. With those caveats in place I think yoga would be brilliant for you because other than some Pilates, no other exercise regimen is going to work as hard on lengthening and strengthening the spine as well as the supporting and abdominal muscles. Just remember to take it easy and, who knows, maybe you can push out that surgery for ever - it is my belief that surgery is all too quickly done...
All the best!
