Will a FotoFacial turn back the signs of ageing?

The "FotoFacial" skin treatment seems to be the solution to many common skin problems. Health24 spoke to Dr Salome Gurgenidze or the Radiance For You skin clinic - where FotoFacial treatment is one of the most popular treatments - to find out exactly what this "miracle procedure" entails and how it can benefit you.

Just to put you in the picture, FotoFacialRF is a skin treatment based on the combined use of gentle light – Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Bi-polar Radio Frequency (RF), that work together to enhance the skin. This skin repairing procedure is also known as Foto Rejuvenation or Skin Rejuvenation and is only done on people older than 18 years.

Which skin conditions benefit most from a FotoFacialRF?

  • Vascular lesions (rosacea) – skin imperfections caused by sun damage (hyperpigmentation, broken capillaries)
  • Acne
  • Comedons (blackheads and whiteheads)
  • Rough texture, enlarged pores and uneven skin tone
  • Superficial and mild wrinkles
  • Skin laxity

How does FotoFacialRF treatment work?

The combined energies of light and radio frequency trigger major processes such as synthesis of new collagen and elastin, as well as collagen remodeling and selective thermolysis (heat driven destruction) of the targets in the skin (e.g. vascular lesions, sun spots).

Due to the effect that these mechanisms have on the skin, FotoFacialRF will rejuvenate the skin (e.g. improve skin laxity, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve volume loss of the face); improve skin texture (reduce pore size) and complexion (remove pigmentation spots and redness); treat sun aged skin; and help to treat acne.

How many FotoFacialRF treatments does one need and how often?
It is advisable to have a course of 3 to 8 treatments, depending on the type and severity of the skin condition. Treatments are usually performed once a month.

Does it hurt?
FotoFacialRF is well tolerated by most individuals. Simultaneous cooling of the skin during the procedure ensures additional safety and comfort.

How much does it cost?
FotoFacialRF costs around R2 000 per treatment and the price includes prior crystal-free, diamond-tip microdermabrasion.

How soon after treatment can one expect to see results?
Immediately after the first treatment the skin looks smoother and more radiant.

The lightening of pigmentation spots and redness is observed within the first 7 to 14 days after treatment. The skin rejuvenating effect of FotoFacialRF is gradual and accumulative – the improvements in skin laxity, fine lines and wrinkles are more noticeable after each treatment.

FotoFacialRF treatment is a popular aesthetic treatment because it can treat so many skin problems and rejuvenate the skin in the process, but it is expensive and you would need a couple of treatments before your skin is young and blemish-free again.
