The UCT/MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine is recruiting volunteers for a research study on the effects of chilli on metabolic function. The aim of this study is to measure how eating a meal containing chilli affects metabolic rate, body temperature, blood glucose and insulin levels and the function of blood vessels. We are specifically interested in these effects in people who are in the early stages of insulin resistance, a symptom of Metabolic Syndrome and a precursor to diabetes. Participants will visit the laboratory on three occasions, so that researchers can measure their glucose and insulin function (visit 1), as well as their metabolic response to eating one meal containing chilli, and a second meal without chilli (visits 2 and 3).
Those interested in volunteering for this research should:
- Be between the ages of 18 and 50 years.
- Be willing to eat a meal containing chilli, but must not eat chilli on a regular basis (less than two times per week).
- Have a body mass index above 25 kg×m-2and a waist circumference greater than 102cm (males) or 88cm (females).
- Have no known medical condition and should not require chronic medication.
- Be available on weekdays and on weekends for testing.
Benefits of participating in the study include:
- Results from a glucose tolerance test as used to measure insulin and glucose metabolism.
- Measurement of resting metabolic rate and metabolic rate in response to eating.
