Human trafficking: babies for sale

An authority says dozens of pregnant teens arrested during a raid last month on a Nigerian clinic accused of illegally selling babies are victims of human trafficking.

Arinze Orakwe, a spokesman for the National Agency for Prohibition of Traffic in Persons, said that 30 of girls between 15 and 18 years are now helping investigators track down the people who lured them to the clinic in Nigeria's southern city of Aba.

Abia state police arrested 32 girls and the director of the Heda Clinic in a raid.

Orakwe says the agency considers the clinic director the only suspect.

He said two girls have returned home after giving birth, and the rest of the girls are still at the agency's shelter in the nearby city of Enugu.

Authorities say that babies are sold for up to $6,400 (about R42,000) in the area.
