Gay rights activist: no more bullying

Activists gathered at the UN are demanding an end to homophobic bullying, saying that gay rights are human rights that must be respected by all governments.

Judy Shepherd, the mother of a young man murdered in an anti-gay crime in Wyoming in 1988, said that people with different sexual identities and orientations are all human beings with similar aspirations.

Sitting on the same panel, UN Assistant Undersecretary-General Ivan Simonovic has emphasized that human rights must be absolute for all people, and says the UN will soon release a new study on violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The event is being held in advance of International Human Rights Day.
