Gays happy for new Facebook option

Facebook made many of its gay users very happy on 17 February 2011 when it introduced a civil unions and domestic partnerships option to the list of relationships that users can choose from to highlight their romantic status.

One of the groups working with Facebook to add the options is the non-profit Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The group said that the option for civil unions or domestic partnerships is only available in the America, France, Australia, Canada and the UK.

But according to Facebook’s spokesperson Andrew Noyes, they are only rolling out the feature in countries where users asked for it.

Currently South Africa’s romantic-status list options only consist of: single, in a relationship, engaged, married, it’s complicated, in an open relationship, widowed, separated and divorced.
