There are several different areas of the throat that is listed as areas where cancer of the throat can occur. These are nasopharyngeal cancer; oropharyngeal cancer; hypopharyngeal cancer; glottic cancer; supraglottic cancer; and subglottic cancer.

Factors that can increase your risk of throat cancer include: tobacco use; alcohol consumption; viral infections (epscially human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus; gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD); and exposure to certain toxic substances (especially at work).

·        Tobacco use, including smoking and chewing tobacco

·        Excessive alcohol use

·        Viral infections, including human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus

·        A diet lacking in fruits and vegetables

·        Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

·        Exposure to toxic substances at work
