Dry cough and a painful chest may be due to dozens of different causes.  The pain in the chest is often due to acute coughing and straining of the muscles and sometimes bruising and inflammation of the airways.  Common causes will include acute hay fever and and post-nasal drip, acid coming up the food pipe, and sometimes it may be a side effect of certain medications.  Acute viral infections either of the upper respiratory tract or the large upper airways is also a common cause.
