Pectrolyte for 9-year-old
Hi. My daughter is 9 year old and has diarrhoea for 3 days now..no vomiting. Pharmacist has recommended a probiotic chewable tablet and Pectrolyte. Pectrolyte dosage is 2 to 4 medicine measures with water. How do I administer the medicine ‘with water’? Is it supposed to be mixed in some water or was she supposed to take Leftrolyte then drink water afterwards, and how much water, etc? Please provide clarity. *I do intend to take her to the doctor on Monday. Thank you kindly.

Your question only appeared for the Paediatrician today 19 January. Questions are usually answered on the day that they are posted. Sorry about this late reply to your important question. I suppose that your daughter has already seen your doctor. She seems to have had severe diarrhoea. Diarrhoea in children of your daughter's age starting during the summer months us usually caused by a virus infection or sometimes by bacteria (germs) known as Shigella. In particular shigella infection causes quite severe diarrhoea. Your pharmacist was right to advise that she take probiotics. Pectrolyte is a medicine containing kaolin and pectin which has been used for many years to treat diarrhoea in children and adults. The dose for your daughter is 2 and a half medicine measures (12.5 ml) given 3 times a day. No water needs to be added to the Pectrolyte. It is important to drink water (about half a glass) after the dose is given. Do not mix the Pectrolyte with the water in the glass.  If diarrhoea persists consult your doctor, which I presume you have already done.
