Reflux or wind
Good day Dr My 3 week old was diagnosed with reflux... he really doesn't vomit that much... it's only with a burp... What are the chances that it's not reflux but only milk coming out along with winds? Thank you

Thank you for your question. This is a very common problem, trying to distinguish between a baby having definite reflux or just a small amount of milk being brought up with a wind. Babies with definite reflux will bring up small amounts of milk during or after every feed and often when laid down to sleep after feeds. This usually happens without obviously breaking a wind or burping after feeds. Also babies with definite reflux are often restless after feeds and may not be able to sleep because of discomfort caused by acid from the stomach refluxing back into the lower part of the oesopahagus (food pipe). Babies who bring up a small amount of milk after breaking a wind after feeds do not do this after every feed. Only from time to time. It is quite obvious that they only bring up small amounts of the feed when they are being burped. There is no regular vomiting after every feed.
