Fitspiration, or ‘fitspo’ is a growing phenomenon on social media sites such as Facebook and Pinterest which usually features a poster with a motivational quote around exercise or healthy eating.
However, while some of them are indeed quite inspiring, some of them are dangerously close to the controversial ‘thinspo’ posters which promote being skinny and eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.
Fitspo sites and posters generally promote more toned and muscular female figures as objects of motivation with ‘motivational’ quotes such as “I’ve learned that life is tough, but I am tougher”.
However, others often miss the mark of being motivational and come very close to being destructive. Visit our gallery here, where we have identified some of the more harmful Fitspo posters and elaborated on why they miss the mark.
