Which sugary foods are the most dangerous for diabetics?

There are three types of diabetes:

  • Diabetes type 1, where the pancreas is unable to produce insulin
  • Diabetes type 2. This is the most prevalent form of diabetes and is a condition where existing insulin is unable to lower blood sugar sufficiently/effectively.
  • Gestational diabetes. This kind of diabetes only happens during pregnancy.

Whatever kind of diabetes one suffers from, the main aim is to avoid sugar spikes where the body has to deal with large quantities of blood sugar or glucose at a given time.

There are two ways to achieve this aim. One is to cut down on sugars or foods that are quickly converted to large amounts of glucose (largely refined carbohydrates). The other is to slow down the rate at which carbohydrates are converted to blood sugar. The rate at which food is converted to glucose is called the glycaemic index.
