Heartburn is caused by acid from the stomach burning the oesophagus. It can be caused by incorrect eating, but can also sometimes be a symptom of underlying problems. If you only get it occasionally, it might be worth trying one of these home heartburn remedies from Health24 users.
Gavin Falcke - I suffered from severe heartburn. I went to the doctor and had all types of tests including cameras up and down both ends. After years of Nexium (which worked will) I discovered what the problem was. Every time I ate a chocolate I would get heartburn. My favourite food was causing me such pain. Anyway I couldn’t stop eating chocolate so I took a Nexium as an antidote for years which worked but was very expensive. I then heard about bicarbonate of soda (1 teaspoon to a glass of water) which also has been working for me.
Kedibone Mimi Sechuane - The home remedy I tried is taking a pinch of bicarbonate of soda with water or pinch of instant coffee only.
Essai Pillay - My remedy is a ¼ teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a tot of water-preferably luke warm water (mixed until dissolved) and shoot it down without it touching your taste buds. It will make you burp out all or most of the gas that is sitting on your chest. I use it when I cook any gassy foods such as cabbage, beans, chick peas etc. Works like magic!
Janette Cumming - One of the most effective “home” or non-medical remedies I have found is to eat a piece of black liquorice. I used it through four pregnancies and still do now when I get the odd attack. Works in about 10 minutes! If it is really bad, I take a heaped teaspoon (dissolved in water) of Dr Auer’s Base Powder before going to bed and it is an instant cure!
Sophia van der Westhuizen- The best home remedy for heartburn is 1/2 a teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda taken with a glass of water. Do not dissolve the Bicarb in the water.
Janine Gibbons - I find just drinking about half a cup of milk helps immediately.
Beverly Busa - I take a product called Xango which is completely natural made from the whole mangosteen fruit along with a few other juices e.g. strawberry, cranberry, apple, pear, cherry. Traditionally it has been used in Thailand and South East Asia for thousands of years. They grind the pericarp and make tea out of it for digestive problems. This product has a host of benefits, if you are interested you can google xanthones/mangosteen and you will find an amazing array of articles on the benefits.
