Around 10% of hospitalised Covid-19 patients are either readmitted or die within 30 days after their discharge, a new Canadian study has found.
The sobering findings, published on 16 May in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, outline how researchers from the University of Alberta reviewed a mammoth amount of data on all adults admitted to hospitals in Alberta and Ontario between January 2020 and September 2021. Nearly 844 000 patient records were analysed. Half of Ontario and Alberta comprise half of Canada's population.
In their paper, the 15 researchers wrote that despite all the attention focused on Covid-19-related hospital admissions and death rates, relatively little attention has been paid to patients returning to hospital.
