South African scientists recently announced the detection and identification of a new Covid-19 virus variant, subsequently named Omicron.

In response to the announcement, many countries around the globe placed South Africa on their travel red lists, and flights from and to South Africa, and neighbouring southern African destinations were banned.

The South African government has called the response from these countries punishment for discovering the variant.
