Covid-19 begins as a respiratory tract infection, but evidence has shown that the disease can damage multiple organ systems.
In a new South African study, researchers at the University of the Witwatersrand delved into the neuropsychiatric manifestations of Covid-19, which can include from headaches, anosmia (smell loss), seizures, an altered mental status and psychiatric disorders. Although cases have been reported worldwide, research in SA has been limited.
"Neuropsychiatric manifestations of Covid-19 have been reported in countries around the world, including new-onset psychosis in patients with no personal or family psychiatric history," according to the researchers, whose work was published in the South African Medical Journal.
