The Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan was reported as the epicentre of the SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes Covid-19 disease) outbreak in late December 2019.

But according to new research, the virus may have first begun circulating and transmitting undetected among people at least two months before the cluster outbreaks linked to the wet market. 

The researchers’ study was designed to answer the question of how long SARS-CoV-2 have circulated in China before it was discovered, said senior author, Professor Joel Wertheim in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health at UC San Diego School of Medicine.
