Hygiene remains a major problem in South African public toilets. A Taiwan government official recently advised all men to sit while they urinate, in order to have cleaner toilets and better personal and public hygiene. We asked our users their thoughts on this. This is what they had to say:
AK Sultan: “As Muslims we are taught from infancy to squat while passing stool or urine. When squatting the stomach is pressed against the thighs and thereby also relieving on of all the waste inside you. We also use water to cleanse after urinating and passing stool. The squatting way will save you from any form of disease or bacteria which are common in Public toilets. Also sitting will help you not to mess your clothing with impurities.”
Vinesh Mayku: “At home, YES At a urinal – No! There should be a notice at public toilets and urinals, which should read something like this: - WE AIM TO PLEASE YOU, SO, YOU TOO, PLEASE AIM!”
Pieter Rayners: “It’s the most healthiest thing a men can do to prevent prostate cancer in later years of one’s life. Women never get prostate cancer because they sit, it relieves as the bladder completely nothing stay behind in the bladder cause infections.”
Carol : “I think it's a great idea for men to sit to pee. Not only is the floor cleaner, but the seat, the cistern and the walls are cleaner (when they shake, they spray all over the place) and the seat is always down ... :)) I'm loving my bathroom now that hubby sits to pee and he loves it too.”
Angela VL Paracchini: “It’s the weirdest thing to see but of course it’s more hygienic, at least the toilet mat will stay clean for longer,” via Facebook.
Vera Jonkers: “YES! Please – having had to share a bathroom with some high powered, well-respected men at my place of work, I have very strong views on this. The floor was always full of droplets and I am disgusted that the men who messed expected the cleaning staff to wipe up after them. Sis man!”
