10 things you should know about armed transparent burglar bars

accreditation

Security systems are constantly being developed and improved in order to make it as difficult as possible for intruders to gain access to premises and residences. The new developments implement various means to stop and stall criminal elements for as long as possible, thereby allowing time to action a personal protection plan as well as give the police and reaction units time to arrive.

Polycarbonate bars are a popular choice due to their transparency. A proudly South African product, Armed Bars now offers new and improved transparent security bars with an integrated sensor for a top-quality active alarm monitoring system.

1.     Transparent burglar bars are aesthetically pleasing

A physical barrier doesn’t have to fight with your home’s aesthetic. The transparency of the polycarbonate improves the look of a property and affords homeowners a sense of safety and freedom within their home. The thin armed wire is corrosion-protected and is not visible when looking through the transparent bars.

2.     It provides permanent alarmed perimeter protection

Armed Bars combine the polycarbonate barrier and an alarm monitoring system to introduce the ultimate physical barrier. Armed Bars counter the possible weaknesses of polycarbonate and offer the homeowner peace of mind with permanent alarmed perimeter protection.

Two different security products, an alarm system and transparent physical barriers, have been ingeniously combined to form a vital security product. The weakness of one product is strengthened by the other product’s properties.

3.     The polycarbonate is super strong

Transparent burglar bars are manufactured from polycarbonate, a thermoplastic polymer that offers incredible strength for a strong physical barrier. Polycarbonate is used globally for police riot shields, bullet-resistant windows and airplane windows.

4.     It can be connected to an existing alarm system

This technology allows the homeowner to fully utilise their alarm system with permanent perimeter protection and the ability to maintain regular movement within the home. This means you can open, close and clean the windows without activating a false alarm. Even the cat can move through the windows without having an effect on the alarm. No more false alarms caused by human error, plants, insects and animals!

Armed Bars can be connected to any existing alarm board to integrate with your security company or response service.

5.     Armed Bars provide peace of mind

While traditional polycarbonate bars can withstand a lot of pressure (a brick or hammer will not easily penetrate the bar) and their flexibility makes it more difficult to detatch them from the frame using a crowbar, they may not hold up well against a prolonged attack, as is true for many other security measures.

Should the Armed Bars be cut, melted, kicked out or tampered with in an attempted burglary, the thin wire will break and activate the alarm, thereby alerting you and your alarm company to respond. The in-series connection of the wires in the transparent security bars receives an electrical pulse from the alarm board and the end-of-line resistor protects the bars if the electrical pulse is bypassed or bridged.

6.     It will fit any size window

You can fit Armed Bars up to 1m in width without having to place any cross fits on the bar. If you use cross fits, you can go infinity, as long as no fitments are more than 1m apart.

7.     They will stand the test of time

The bars used for Armed Bars have UV protection on both sides, which means you don’t have to worry about them yellowing in the sun over time.

8.     Easy maintenance

Just like glass panels, these bars require cleaning to remove dust and provide a clear view. A soft damp cloth will do the job perfectly and special cleaning kits are also available. The thin armed wire is also corrosion-protected and will therefore not rust.

9.     They’re affordable

The supply and fit of Armed Bars for a standard-size window of 650mm x 650mm will be roughly R685. Price difference depends on the type of fitment required by the customer; the cost of connecting the wired system to the alarm board will be additional.

10.  Make sure to use a reputable installer

As the transparent burglar bar industry is currently unregulated, it is important to use a reputable installer. Before accepting a quotation for these attractive polycarbonate products, we recommend the following steps are taken to prevent any possible disappointment:

  • Make sure that the installer has a reputable track record;
  • Insist on proof of independent tests done on the polycarbonate being used;
  • Ensure that the installer is registered with a controlling body such as TBASA (Transparent Barrier Association of South Africa);
  • Request installation specifications before accepting a quotation.
