Chris Matthee of Bellville writes: How do I keep my ItalOven pizza oven dry during the rainy season in Cape Town? It was a DIY build and it’s out in the open in the garden. In winter, the cement gets so wet and cold that it’s difficult to warm the oven up properly. In summer, it works perfectly. Is there a product I can use to seal the exterior? Or is a waterproof canvas cover an option when it’s not in use?

Cedric Burger of ItalOven replies: I’m glad to hear that you’re getting good use out of your oven. To prevent the plasterwork on the outside from drawing water during winter, we suggest the following: first coat the exterior of the oven with a masonry primer. Then apply two coats of roof paint in the colour of your choice. As an alternative to roof paint, you can apply two coats of an enamel paint, which is an even better solution. A waterproof cover will also provide excellent protection, preventing dampness from drawing into the cement. For details, contact ItalOven and we’ll assist you as far as possible.
