With three teenagers and a Labrador puppy all under one roof, the Riley family had their hands full trying to make their home both beautiful and functional! In addition to being used as a base for home-schooling, the space is also home to a variety of musical instruments ranging from a piano to a large drum kit.
To offset the cool greys, warmth was added to this space with a soft, fluffy rug and scatter cushions, while ottomans provide extra seating without cluttering the space.
Upon moving in five years ago, the Rileys wanted to make the most of this large living room with its views of the front garden and decided to turn it into a study area, music room and chill space – all in one. While serving multiple purposes, the room ended up becoming a clash of colours and styles, featuring an orange throw, red rug, pink chair and a lime-green wall that dominated the space.
To bring the different functions of the room together and restore calm, the family drew inspiration from Scandinavian décor that evokes sleek lines, simple wooden furniture, natural textures, uncluttered spaces and neutral colours.
The walls were painted in shades of grey from the Dulux Colours of the World™ Peaceful Scandinavia palette and natural off-white tones were introduced with the furniture and accessories. The room is now anchored by striking Rich Scandinavia painted on the wall at the desk, while lighter greys from the palette create variety in the space without overwhelming it.
To combine function and beauty, the Rileys painted geometric shapes on cork, also using the Peaceful Scandinavia palette, and created a unique pinboard that doubles up as a work of art. How clever!
