You will need

  • tray
  • 4mm marine ply
  • craft knife
  • jigsaw
  • g-clamps
  • sandpaper
  • pencil
  • steel ruler
  • right square ruler
  • black fineliner
  • Woodoc Water-Borne FLOOR (Matt/Gloss)
  • Woodoc Colours: Clifton Grey and Opal
  • Flat stirring sticks
  • 2 x containers for mixing
  • paintbrush
  • masking tape

Get started

1. Measure the inside of the tray and cut the plywood to this measurement with the jigsaw. Remember to secure the timber to your work surface with the g-clamps. Sand the edges smooth.

Tip To prevent the plywood from splintering on the edge, score the line with a craft knife before you cut it with the jigsaw.

2. Draw an Aztec-inspired pattern on the plywood. Start by drawing a cross line in the centre of the width and the length of the plywood. From this cross draw lines the width of the steel ruler at a 45° angle to fill each quarter. Now you can mark which areas you want to leave plain wood with a pencil. Once you’re happy with your pattern, redraw all the lines with the fineliner.

3. Mask all the areas that are going to remain untreated and the areas you want to colour Opal with masking tape.

4. Pour about 150ml Woodoc Water-Borne Floor into both containers. Add a little of the Woodoc Colours to each container and mix well by stirring with the flat sticks.  Also stir regularly while applying the product.

5. Once you’ve masked all the areas, paint the remaining spaces with two coats of Clifton Grey, letting it dry between coats.

6. When the second coat has dried, remove the masking tape only on the areas you want to paint with the Opal. Mask the edges of the Clifton Grey areas and paint the exposed areas with two coats of Opal, again letting the sealer dry between coats.

7. Remove all the masking tape and paint the entire surface with two coats of clear Woodoc Water-Borne FLOOR.

8. Place the plywood in the tray and you’re done.
