Cost: under R60

Makes: 1 x 23cm cake

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 30 minutes

• 100ml castor sugar

• 200g butter at room temperature

• 1 extra-large egg

• 375ml flour

• 15ml baking powder

• 250ml finely grated cheddar cheese

• 250ml milk

• 60ml Marmite

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C and then grease a square 23cm baking pan.

2. Cream the sugar and half the butter until light and fluffy. Beat the egg into the mixture. Sift the flour and baking powder and fold into the mixture with the cheese and milk to form a smooth batter. Pour into the prepared baking tray and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean; prick all over with the tester.

3. Melt the remaining butter and the Marmite, and pour over the cake while still hot. Cut into squares and enjoy.
