April is the month to plant spring-flowering bulbs. Look out for Anemone, Babiana, Dutch iris, Ornithogalum, Sparaxis, Tritonia and Ranunculus at your local garden centre. Now is also the time to plant sun-loving annuals; try alyssum, calendula, dwarf snapdragon, lobelia, phlox, pansy and viola. Plant them around bare-stemmed shrubs to add colour and interest to borders.
