Enhance your balcony, steps or stoep with hanging baskets and terracotta pots filled with colour and fragrance! Hanging baskets with wire on the outside and fibre lining on the inside work well – by cutting through the material, trailing plants can be grown all around the outside of the basket. Finish off with an eye-catching focal plant in the centre. The indigenous plants listed below will all thrive in containers; plant in well-drained soil and trim back regularly to keep in check.
• Honeybell (Freylinia lanceolata) is appreciated for its creamy-yellow tubular flowers that emit an alluring honey fragrance, attracting birds and butterflies.
• Wild rosemary (Eriocephalus africanus) grows rapidly and boasts strong, aromatic leaves. In winter, it shows off its white, daisy-like flowers with purple centres.
