Most gardeners would agree that homegrown tomatoes are tastier than store-bought ones. There is a huge variety that can be grown from seed, especially the heirlooms in a range of colours. All tomatoes like plenty of sun and do best in well-drained, compost-rich soil.
Spacing and correct watering is vital as stressed plants are susceptible to white fly. Water tomatoes regularly (not too little or too much as this can cause the fruit to crack) around the base of the plant to avoid wetting the leaves, as wet leaves are susceptible to fungal disease. Space plants at least 1m apart for good air circulation.
