The story of the ornamental grape-bedecked pergola is a prime example of the way things work at Kalmoesfontein: Cornelia Badenhorst wanted to plant something in front of their new guesthouse, The Stables, to provide shelter for the stoep from the scorching summer sun.

But every time she wrote “ornamental grape” on the shopping list, her husband Adi would cross it out and ask her why she wasn’t considering something that would bear fruit. Because on this farm, man, beast and plant must all contribute towards making AA Badenhorst Family Wines a success.
