BOOKS:

Fruit of a Poisoned Tree: The Inge Lotz Murder and a Miscarriage of Justice by Antony Altbeker (Jonathan Ball), South Africa's leading writer on policing, is to be reissued with a new epilogue, accounting for what happened since the trial of Fred van der Vyver for the bloody murder of his girlfriend, Inge Lotz, in 2005.

The Stellenbosch student was bludgeoned to death in her flat and Van der Vyver was charged with her murder. After a long and sensational trial, he got off – the forensic evidence was compromised, the police investigation botched. Altbeker's account is detailed, perceptive and very compelling. (I got a copy the other day and could barely put it down till I was done.)
