Dr Joan Louwrens decided to throw herself into 'adventure medicine' when her husband died, leaving her alone with two small daughters to raise. She has worked in some of the world's most remote places including the Kruger Park, the Australian Outback, the Atlantic Ocean islands to name but a few where she has dealt with a vast range of medical challenges, from rabies to deep-vein thrombosis, childbirth to wisdom-tooth extraction, catatonia to depression. Here is an extract from her book: A Wilder Life: Journey of an Adventuring doctor.
