BOOK: The Errors of Dr Browne by Mark Winkler (Penguin).
When Dr Thomas Browne, naturalist, philosopher, physician and author, accepts the role of both inquisitor and witness in one of England’s last witch trials, he embarks on what his biographer would later call ‘the most culpable and stupid action of his life’. This is the subject of Mark Winkler’s new novel, The Errors of Dr Browne (Penguin). Here is the opening of the first section. Winkler is the author of the critically acclaimed novels An Exceptionally Simple Theory (of Absolutely Everything), Wasted, as well as The Safest Place You Know and Theo & Flora, both of which were shortlisted for the Sunday Times Barry Ronge Fiction Prize. His work has been published worldwide in English and in French translation.
