Penny Haw’s novel The Wilderness Between Us (published by Koehler Books and distributed in South Africa by Karavan) is about a Tsitsikamma hiking group and what happens when something goes wrong. Faye and her friends’ anorexic daughter, Clare, find themselves isolated from the others in the group by a flood. When Clare is injured Faye has to dig deep to help get them to safety, and a new bond forms. Described as a “fast-moving story about family [and] friendship”, The Wilderness Between Us was praised as a “thrilling read” by Tracy Going.

Journalist and columnist Haw has written for many South African publications. She published a children’s book, Nicko: The Tale of a Vervet Monkey on an African Farm, in 2017. The Wilderness Between Us is her first novel for adults. Two works of historical fiction are forthcoming.
