This short biography is about Thembi Kgatlana, who became an international football icon despite all the odds stacked against her. It is written by Nikolaos Kirkinis, author of the bestselling The Curse of Teko Modise, about another famous footballer. Strike a Rock is a well written, easy read.
In this account, Kgatlana’s story is one of self-belief, never doubting yourself, and never settling for less. Young Thembi grew up as a tomboy who spent most of her time playing football with boys in the rough streets of Mohlakeng. At school, she was a talented athlete, but her parents were not aware of her talent until she brought home a trophy. She was a naughty child – especially in tandem with her cousin Mpho. The mischief they get up to, however, I find rather hard to believe. The author may have added too much salt in, for instance, the headmaster story.
